One-page website with a stationary navigation bar: How can the style of the "active link" be modified when on the relevant section?

Working on my single-page portfolio website and looking for a way to enhance the navigation bar. Currently, the nav bar is fixed in position and when a link is clicked, it smoothly scrolls up or down to the corresponding section of the page. Is there an elegant solution to have the color of the link in the nav bar change when it reaches its corresponding section?

Answer №1

The intended use may not be clear, but one option is to utilize CSS styling for the :active state or leverage jQuery to dynamically apply styling based on the element's position.

Answer №2

One approach I have in mind involves utilizing PHP.

By accessing the current URL through $_SERVER while remaining on the same page, the URL will appear as follows: http://example.com/#section

You can then break down the link to retrieve the corresponding div value. Subsequently, you would execute a PHP conditional statement for each menu item to determine if it represents the div currently displayed and adjust the CSS class to "active" with your desired styling.

I hope this explanation is beneficial. Feel free to share any code snippets if you give it a try.

Let's collaborate to discover a solution together.
