Container "forced down" in Internet Explorer versions 7 and higher

I'm in the final stages of polishing up my website . However, when I checked it on IE8, I noticed that the main container is not aligning properly with the navigation sidebar. Additionally, some elements in the navigation bar appear to be overlapping. Has anyone encountered these issues before and if so, what solutions have worked for you?

Any help or suggestions would be highly appreciated. Thank you!

Ensure your code is valid by using the following link: http://validator.w3.org/check. It appears that there are numerous errors present, such as misplaced </li> and </div> tags, unnecessary white space within an href, and repeated closing anchor tags like </a></a>.
