Adjust the space between spans by utilizing the margin

There are two spans (although there could be many more) on this web page that I need to adjust the distance between. I tried using the margin-bottom attribute, but it doesn't seem to have any effect. The spans remain in their original positions, which is not what I want. Here is the code I am currently using:

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8"/>
    <title></title>
    <style type="text/css">
        .position, .name{
            overflow: hidden;
        }

        .position{
            margin-bottom: 40px;
        }
    </style>
</head>
<body>
    <span class="position">Designer</span><br/>
    <span class="name">John Smith</span>
</body>
</html>

Answer №1

span behaves as an inline element rather than a block element, meaning it does not adhere to (vertical) margin properties. To work around this, you can utilize padding or change the span's display to inline-block; and then apply margins. This method is widely supported in most modern browsers.

Answer №2

If I were to make a suggestion, I think line-height might be the solution you're seeking.
