Is it feasible to create a CSS selector that targets elements that are not the first child?

Is it feasible to use CSS to select all child elements except for the first child?

Answer №1

Indeed, the :not(:first-child) combination can be helpful.

parent child:not(:first-child) { /* style */ }

For instance:

div span:not(:first-child) {
    color: red;
}
<div>
    <span>A</span>
    <span>B</span>
    <span>C</span>
</div>

Answer №2

To target specific elements within a parent container, you can utilize the :nth-child selector:

:nth-child(n+2) {}

This will apply styles to all children starting with the second one. Alternatively, if all children share the same class (or element tag), you can also use:

#parent .class + .class {}
#parent div + div {}

Answer №3

To exclude the first child div:nth-child(1) can be used.
