What causes child margins to extend beyond the boundaries of div elements?

Can anyone shed some light on the advantages of CSS behavior that allows a child element's top and bottom margins to extend beyond the boundaries of its block-parent?

Check out this fiddle for a straightforward example. The pink div is influenced by the margins of the h1.

I have a hunch it involves collapsing margins, but the concept remains fuzzy to me.

Answer №1

Styling with straight lines:

  1. Body.
  2. Pure HTML.
  3. CSS..

Using only pure HTML will have an effect on all div elements.
