Utilizing CSS to Create Fixed Position Elements

How can I create a CSS Style with a fixed position property for a div? When I place this particular div inside another div containing text, the fixed-positioned div overlaps the text, causing it to be hidden. I want to align the text and image divs next to each other so that the text flows around the image without being hidden behind it.

<html>
<head>
<style type="text/css">
    .newspaper
    {
      -moz-column-count:3; /* Firefox */
      -webkit-column-count:3; /* Safari and Chrome */
      column-count:3;
      -webkit-column-width:100px;
      column-width:100px;
    }
  </style>
  </head>
<body>

  <p><b>Note:</b> Internet Explorer and Opera do not support the column-count property.</p>
  <div class="newspaper" >
    <div class="changeFont" style='font-size:18px;'>
      Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit, sed diam nonummy nibh euismod tincidunt ut laoreet dolore magna
      aliquam erat volutpat. Ut wisi enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exerci tation
    </div>

  <div style="float: right; position:fixed; left:170px;top:80px;display:inline-table;">
    <img id="imageTable" width="280" height="80" src="http://www.google.co.in/logos/2011/alamara11-hp.jpg"/>
  </div>

Answer №1

Here's a fun experiment to try - play around with CSS positioning on both divs and incorporate z-index: 1; or z-index: -1; for different effects.

Understanding the purpose of z-index in CSS is crucial. By assigning different values to z-index, you can control the stacking order of elements on your webpage. For example, if the first div has a z-index of 1 and the second div has a z-index of 2, the second one will appear above the first one. Remember that this functionality requires absolute positioning. For more detailed information, refer to the manual.

Answer №2

To control the positioning of an image within text, one option is to float the image either to the left or right. However, this limits your ability to have the image in a custom position.

Take a look at this example http://example.com/image-wrap

If you want to create columns of text with images, you can place the image within a column to allow the text to wrap around it. But having an image between two text columns where the text wraps around it is not possible without using absolute positioning for the image, which would cause the text to ignore it.
