What advantages does using font-family Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif offer over simply using sans-serif?

I'm struggling to understand the purpose of this. To me, it looks exactly the same, so what's the benefit of using Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif over just sans-serif?

Answer №1

The font displayed to the user is determined by the browser and its settings. Using font-family: sans-serif; ensures a consistent experience with a sans-serif font, regardless of the user's default system preferences.

It's important to note that users can change their default fonts (e.g., Helvetica, Arial), so it's best practice to explicitly specify your font choices in order of preference for a more unified design.

In this scenario, the font will first default to Arial, then switch to Helvetica if Arial is unavailable, and ultimately resort to the system's sans-serif default if Helvetica cannot be located.

Answer №2

It is recommended to utilize the font stack of "Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" as this will ensure that if 'Arial' is not supported, the browser will default to 'Helvetica', which is a suitable alternative, and so forth.
