Ways to adjust the color of a navbar link according to the current page you are visiting?

I'm looking to implement a feature on my website where the area around the nav-link darkens when someone navigates to a certain page, making it easier for them to see which page they are currently on. I am working with Bootstrap v4.3.1 and Razor Pages. Can you provide guidance on how to achieve this effect?

Answer №1

Appreciate the assistance, but I decided to implement a unique solution in each of my pages by inserting the following code snippet into their respective files. The only variation is that the "Timeline" identifier is individualized for each page:

<script>
    document.getElementById("Timeline").classList.add("active");
</script>

In addition, within my master Layout file, I adjusted each file to include an appropriate id:

<li class="nav-item" id="Timeline">
  <a class="nav-link text-white" asp-page="/Timeline">Timeline</a>

Answer №2

To make an item active, simply add the active class like so:

<ul class="list-group">
  <li class="list-group-item active">Item 1</li>
  <li class="list-group-item">Item 2</li>
  <li class="list-group-item">Item 3</li>
</ul>

In the li tag:

<li class="list-group-item active">

Answer №3

To implement this site-wide, you can insert the following code into your _Layout file and assign an id to each navigation bar link that corresponds to the first item in the path it directs users to:

 var x = $(location).attr('pathname');
// For example, if the URL is:example.com/abc/123?test=100, x will be set to /abc/123
 x = x.split("/")[1];
// The "/abc/123/" path is split by "/" and x becomes the first item, which in this case is: "abc"
 $('#'+x).addClass('onpage');
// Finally, it locates an element with an id of "abc" and applies the 'onpage' class to it
