Is it feasible to incorporate callbacks in CSS3 animations?

I've been searching for a way to use CSS3 animations with callbacks. Is it possible to animate one element and then trigger the animation of another once the first one is finished?

I've spent hours on Google trying to find an answer, but maybe I'm using the wrong terminology?

Answer №1

CSS3 animations should not be seen as a replacement for JavaScript.

CSS is primarily designed for styling purposes with limited logic and does not have the capability to "look back" (meaning you cannot select a parent element). CSS functions instantly and is activated by browser triggers like :hover, :active, and :link.

The main goal of CSS is to provide quick styling without complex or time-consuming processes that could potentially slow down the browser.

Due to these reasons, callbacks are not supported in CSS.

Check out the fascinating discussion by Apple on "CSS Effects, Part 2: Galleries and 3D Effects from WWDC 2010":

You have the option to set a startdelay for your animation and utilize a transitionEndListener specifically designed for webkit-based browsers.
