What is the proper way to credit code obtained from a website?

A helpful website assisted me in designing my own site, where I borrowed elements of the code to customize it for my own needs. Although I have added my own content, certain sections of the HTML and CSS are from the original website. Should I attribute the work by including a link to the original developer's page? I have currently placed the link in the footer, but I am unsure if more action is needed to properly credit the source.

Answer №1

Follow the terms outlined in the licensing agreement provided by the code owner when using their code, and seek clarification from the copyright holder if needed.

Answer №2

When it comes to legality, the permission to use someone else's work depends on the license the original author has chosen to release it under. There are numerous open source licenses, each with their own unique requirements for attribution and reuse (even Stack Overflow).

As for morality, the decision is ultimately yours to make. If you're incorporating a significant portion of code, it may be appropriate to give credit on the page. A simple comment could suffice, or perhaps no attribution is necessary if the license (and your own conscience) permits it.
