What is the most effective way to attain maximum height for this particular element?

Is there a way to make the height of the left-div 100% of the window's height?

<div id="left-div"></div>

    <div id="content">

        <div class="thumbnail"></div>
        <div class="thumbnail"></div>
        <div class="thumbnail"></div>
        <div class="thumbnail"></div>
        <div class="thumbnail"></div>
        <div class="thumbnail"></div>
        <div class="thumbnail"></div>
        <div class="thumbnail"></div>
        <div class="thumbnail"></div>
        <div class="thumbnail"></div>
        <div class="thumbnail"></div>
        <div class="thumbnail"></div>
        <div class="thumbnail"></div>
        <div class="thumbnail"></div>
        <div class="thumbnail"></div>
        <div class="thumbnail"></div>

    </div>

I've already set backgrounds for the html and body tags, so that solution is not an option here. Any other suggestions?

Answer №1

If you want to achieve the desired outcome with the current structure, utilizing jQuery is the best way to go. The code snippet below demonstrates how you can implement a resizing function:

function myResize() {
    $('#left-div').height($('#content').outerHeight());
};

myResize();

$(window).load(function(){
    myResize();
});

$(window).resize(function() {
    myResize();
});

Don't forget to add the following CSS to the #content element:

overflow: hidden;

For more information and a live example, you can check out this JSFiddle link.

Alternatively, you can also explore other methods such as nesting both elements under the same parent with a specified height or using CSS hacks with backgrounds for the #content element.

Answer №2

You can improve the styling of your webpage by adding margin: 0; to the body CSS rule. Here's an example:

body {
  background:#FCFCFC;
  margin: 0;
}

Answer №3

Before setting an element to 100%, consider what it is 100% of. Typically, it refers to the parent element's dimensions. In this scenario, the parent element is the body and currently has no height specified. Therefore, set the body to 100% height.

However, don't forget to ask yourself, 100% of what? The body's parent is the html element. So, ensure to also set the html element to a height of 100%.

Answer №4

To make this work, you must modify a few CSS properties.

Start by removing the float:left from the thumbnail class. Replace it with display:inline-block. This change is necessary because using float affects the height of the body container. Instead of the body being 2000px tall, it will only be 200px.

After that, include position:relative in the CSS of the body tags. The left-div is set to position:absolute. Absolute positioning is in relation to another container, so by adding this CSS to the body tag, you are indicating that the left-div should be absolutely positioned within the body tag.

Lastly, add background-repeat:repeat-y to the CSS of the left-div. You can view the changes in this UPDATED FIDDLE.
