There appears to be a gap on the right side of the <span> element, resembling an additional space at the end

While testing a button on my website, I noticed that all the spans have an extra space at the end. Adding a background box made this gap very noticeable. Upon further inspection of my other pages, I realized that the issue exists there too. I have not made any modifications to the code causing this, so I am seeking help from anyone who might know what is causing it. If you want to see the problem firsthand, you can visit my website sebringautomotivellc.com, where the issue is live at the moment as it is my test site before implementing any changes. Additionally, I have provided screenshots of the problem along with the code: css code, html code, and chrome webtools.

Answer №1

The problem arises from the use of letter-spacing, as evident in this code snippet. This issue has been a longstanding one, as highlighted in this discussion thread.

body {
  color: white;
  background-color: black;
  font-family: sans-serif;
  font-size: 3em;
}

span {
  border: 1px solid yellow;
  color: white;
  letter-spacing: 3vmin;
}

.s2 {
  margin-top: 0.5em;
}

.s2 span {
  letter-spacing: unset;
}
<section class="s1">
  <span>Our Cars</span>
</section>

<section class="s2">
  <span>Our Cars</span>
</section>

The CSS standards group has addressed the issue, confirming that the spec is accurate (extra spacing should only be applied between letters), while pointing out inconsistencies in browser implementations. Discussions also touch upon potential workarounds, such as adding extra padding or adjusting margins.

body {
  color: white;
  background-color: black;
  font-family: sans-serif;
  font-size: 3em;
}

span {
  border: 1px solid yellow;
  color: white;
  letter-spacing: 3vmin;
}

.s2 {
  margin-top: 0.5em;
}

.s2 span {
  padding-left: 3vmin;
}
<section class="s1">
  <span>Our Cars</span>
</section>

<section class="s2">
  <span>Our Cars</span>
</section>
