Mastering the art of creating an authentic carbon fiber CSS background

Authentic carbon fiber consists of a series of interconnected grey fibers that resemble woven sheets in grey color. Does anyone have knowledge on how to replicate this pattern using CSS?

The examples created by Lea Verou do not accurately depict true carbon fiber, so it would be helpful if you are aware of what genuine carbon fiber looks like!

My goal is to achieve a similar effect to the background found here, with additional gradients layered on top of the carbon fiber design.

Answer №1

To create a gradient pattern similar to the one found on a specific website that uses an image as a background, you can follow the technique employed by Lea Verou. By incorporating an additional layer of linear-gradient with darker shades transitioning into lighter tones at the bottom-most level, you can achieve a comparable effect.

Please note: The mentioned website applies an extra layer to blur the edges, but for those solely interested in the interlocking pattern, this additional layer (if deemed necessary) can also be implemented using CSS.

body {
  background-color: rgb(32, 32, 32);
  background-image: linear-gradient(45deg, black 25%, transparent 25%, transparent 75%, black 75%, black), linear-gradient(45deg, black 25%, transparent 25%, transparent 75%, black 75%, black), linear-gradient(to bottom, rgb(8, 8, 8), rgb(32, 32, 32));
  background-size: 10px 10px, 10px 10px, 10px 5px;
  background-position: 0px 0px, 5px 5px, 0px 0px;
}

If you wish to replicate the exact fading effect present on the referenced website, where the gradient transitions into black colors on both ends, you can add an additional layer on top of the existing gradients. This new layer should transition from black to transparent and back to black, as demonstrated in the following snippet.

body {
  background-color: rgb(32, 32, 32);
  background-image: linear-gradient(to right, rgba(0,0,0,1), rgba(0,0,0,0) 20%, rgba(0,0,0,0) 80%, rgba(0,0,0,1)), linear-gradient(45deg, black 25%, transparent 25%, transparent 75%, black 75%, black), linear-gradient(45deg, black 25%, transparent 25%, transparent 75%, black 75%, black), linear-gradient(to bottom, rgb(8, 8, 8), rgb(32, 32, 32));
  background-size: 100% 100%, 10px 10px, 10px 10px, 10px 5px;
  background-position: 0px 0px, 0px 0px, 5px 5px, 0px 0px;
}
