Issues of horizontal spaces in HTML emails

We have been facing an ongoing issue with the layout of our email communications. Upon rendering in Outlook, the emails are displaying additional horizontal gaps/spaces. However, the web version of the email appears to be fine. It's unclear to us the source of these extra gaps in Outlook. Can anyone pinpoint any elements in the code that might be causing this issue?

***Kindly note that we do not have the ability to make direct changes to the code as our email marketing provider manages that. However, we are open to providing suggestions for improvements.

I have shared a portion of the code below (with the code anonymized). The attached images illustrate how the email is displayed in Outlook compared to the desired appearance in the web version.

Your assistance on this matter would be highly valued. Thank you in advance.

Answer №1

Unfortunately, the challenging aspect of developing HTML emails is the necessity to test them across various mail clients (such as Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo), different web browsers (like Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer), and several email clients (including Apple Mail, Outlook, Thunderbird).

Simply viewing the email in a web page won't suffice; you'll have to send it to numerous accounts to ensure it displays correctly in each one. Visit for a list of the most popular email clients.

Since HTML in emails lacks standardization, there are numerous quirks to deal with when it comes to different browsers and clients. For a more detailed explanation, refer to "What’s so hard about HTML emails?" from Campaign Monitor.

Debugging emails without sending them out can be quite challenging, so I'm unable to provide further assistance at the moment. However, I'd be happy to take a look later on.

It seems that many issues arise from the use of paragraph and heading tags in the content, resulting in inconsistent display. The most reliable method for creating HTML emails is to utilize tables, with styling applied to the td tags for font size, line height, and other formatting. By eliminating paragraph and heading tags and adding padding to the surrounding cell tags, you can address many of the issues you are experiencing.

Another helpful tip is to include mso-line-height-rule: exactly; in your styling. This will ensure that Outlook, particularly version 2013, adheres to the specified line height without adding additional spacing.
