Is the CSS :not selector failing to operate as expected?

I have been trying to use the :not selector in my code, but for some reason it's not working. I can't figure out why this is happening, especially since the ul element does have the webmedia-gallery class. Any thoughts on what could be causing this issue?

Answer №1

Attempt to link your not conditions together

ul:not(.languages):not(.webmedia-gallery) li:before {
  ...
}

By combining your not conditions into a single selector, you ensure that none of the classes match. If you separate them into different selectors, at least one will still be met. Chaining the conditions allows you to specify a list whose classes are neither .languages nor .webmedia-gallery

Answer №2

Your rule is using two selectors with the ":not" pseudo-class, which guarantees that one of them will always be a match.

The fiddle you provided functions correctly. Try adding multiple ul elements to see how it behaves: Fiddle
