Is it permissible to have multiple class tags in HTML?

Is the HTML code below correctly formatted?

<div class="navbar" class="menu">foo</div>

Can two classes be applied to the same element?

Answer №1

If you want to define two classes, you can separate them with a space, as shown below:

<div class="header navigation">bar</div>

Answer №2

Class serves as an attribute, not a tag. It is not permitted to have multiple attributes with the same name, as this constitutes an error.

[...]; if there is already an attribute on the token with the exact same name, then this is a duplicate-attribute parse error and the new attribute must be removed from the token.

Typically, browsers will simply disregard the second attribute. Therefore, in the scenario described, the class="menu" attribute is overlooked, and only the navbar class is applied. To utilize both classes, specify class="navbar menu".
