Implementing a dropdown menu within a Bootstrap navbar

Currently, I am working on developing a website and decided to kickstart the project by using the dashboard example provided on the Bootstrap website. However, I encountered an issue when trying to integrate a dropdown into the navbar. It seems that the dropdown remains confined within the navbar, disrupting the entire layout. I am unsure about the particular style that is triggering this problem. Since the code is extensive, I have uploaded it to Codepen for reference: https://codepen.io/andersmmg/pen/wOgmby

Below is the CSS snippet that is essential for ensuring the dashboard style functions correctly:

body {
  font-size: .875rem;
}

.feather {
  width: 16px;
  height: 16px;
  vertical-align: text-bottom;
}

/*
 * Sidebar
 */

.sidebar {
  position: fixed;
  top: 0;
  bottom: 0;
  left: 0;
  z-index: 100; /* Positioned behind the navbar */
  padding: 48px 0 0; /* Equivalent to navbar height */
  box-shadow: inset -1px 0 0 rgba(0, 0, 0, .1);
}

.sidebar-sticky {
  position: relative;
  top: 0;
  height: calc(100vh - 48px);
  padding-top: .5rem;
  overflow-x: hidden;
  overflow-y: auto; /* Allows for scrollable content */
}

@supports ((position: -webkit-sticky) or (position: sticky)) {
  .sidebar-sticky {
    position: -webkit-sticky;
    position: sticky;
  }
}

.sidebar .nav-link {
  font-weight: 500;
  color: #333;
}

.sidebar .nav-link .feather {
  margin-right: 4px;
  color: #999;
}

.sidebar .nav-link.active {
  color: #007bff;
}

.sidebar .nav-link:hover .feather,
.sidebar .nav-link.active .feather {
  color: inherit;
}

.sidebar-heading {
  font-size: .75rem;
  text-transform: uppercase;
}

/*
 * Content
 */

[role="main"] {
  padding-top: 48px; /* Space allocated for fixed navbar */
}

/*
 * Navbar
 */

.navbar-brand {
  padding-top: .75rem;
  padding-bottom: .75rem;
  font-size: 1rem;
  background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, .25);
  box-shadow: inset -1px 0 0 rgba(0, 0, 0, .25);
}

.navbar .form-control {
  padding: .75rem 1rem;
  border-width: 0;
  border-radius: 0;
}

.navbar .form-control::placeholder {
    color: white;
}

.navbar .form-control:focus::placeholder {
    color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.46);
}

.form-control-dark {
  color: #fff;
  background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, .1);
  border-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, .1);
}

.form-control-dark:focus {
  border-color: transparent;
  box-shadow: 0 0 0 3px rgba(255, 255, 255, .25);
}

Answer №1

After removing the code for the drop-down menu and replacing it with the example code from the documentation, the drop menu now functions correctly. It seems that some of the previous code was preventing the drop-down menu from existing outside of its container, causing the parent container to expand (specifically the ul and li elements).

<nav class="navbar navbar-dark fixed-top bg-dark flex-md-nowrap p-0 shadow">
  <a class="navbar-brand col-sm-3 col-md-2 mr-0" href="index.php">Store Manager</a>
  <input class="form-control form-control-dark w-100" type="text" placeholder="Search" aria-label="Search">
  <div class="dropdown dropleft">
    <button class="btn btn-secondary dropdown-toggle" type="button" id="dropdownMenuButton" data-toggle="dropdown" aria-haspopup="true" aria-expanded="false">
      andersmmg
    </button>
    <div class="dropdown-menu" aria-labelledby="dropdownMenuButton">
      <a class="dropdown-item" href="#">Action</a>
      <a class="dropdown-item" href="#">Another action</a>
      <a class="dropdown-item" href="#">Something else here</a>
    </div>
  </div>
</nav>

The button still needs to be styled according to your preferences, but the functionality is now in place. I adjusted the menu to display on the left side (dropleft) to ensure it does not extend beyond the page. You can view a demonstration of the solution on my Fiddle here. I hope this resolves the issue.

Are you noticing changes in your element's style due to Bootstrap?

.navbar-nav .dropdown-menu {
    position: static;
    float: none;
}

This can also override Bootstrap classes.

.dropdown-menu {
    position: absolute;
}

If you're looking for a solution, you could try this:

.dropdown-menu.show {
    position: absolute;
    left: -60px;
}

I hope this solution works for you!

Answer №3

Take a look at this pen to review the solution codepen for the answer 1) I simply adjusted the ul position to absolute and added a grid layout for alignment.

.navbar-nav {
 position: absolute;
 left: 85%;
}
