How to vertically align multiple lines of text using CSS

Struggling with vertical alignment of text in a tabbed layout on my website. Some tabs have single-line text while others span two lines, making it challenging to position the text consistently in the middle of each tab without aligning by the first line.

Attempts with Valign and Line-height have not yielded satisfactory results so far.

Answer №1

To achieve vertical alignment in your design, you can apply the CSS property vertical-align: middle. Keep in mind that for this to work effectively, you will also need to include display: table-cell in your styling.

Here's an example of how this can be implemented within a basic HTML structure:

<div class="wrapper">
    <span>Your Content Here</span>
</div>

In order to center the content vertically, you can use the following CSS rules:

.wrapper {
    text-align: center;
    display: table-cell;
    vertical-align: middle;
}

You can explore a live demo of this concept on JSFiddle.

Answer №2

To achieve both vertical and horizontal text alignment in the center, you can utilize the following CSS properties:

text-align: center;
vertical-align: middle;

The valign attribute is specific to HTML td elements and may not have the desired effect on other elements like your "tabs."

Answer №3

Implement line-height property like this: Example: line-height:20px

Answer №4

If you're looking to better understand how to vertically align elements, this resource on mastering vertical alignment is a great read.

It seems like you're referring to centering the label on each tab selector. One way to achieve this could be by utilizing one of the techniques mentioned in that article and placing your tab text within an inner container.

Have you considered trying:
line-height:100%;? This CSS property might adjust the line height based on the parent's height or fill the screen; it's worth experimenting with.
