Creating a dynamic background image with automatic cropping techniques: How to do it?

I'm currently working on a custom wordpress theme and I've encountered an issue that I need help with. I want to have a wide background image on my homepage with text centered on it, but I also want the height to remain the same as the browser window shrinks. Essentially, I want the image to crop from both sides as needed in order to stay centered. I came across a great example of what I'm looking for on this website, where the top image resizes accordingly when you adjust the browser size:

Any ideas on how I can achieve this effect?

Appreciate any assistance! :)

Answer №1

To achieve this effect, utilize the CSS property background-size with the value of cover. This specific value was designed for this exact purpose.

cover
An option that serves as the opposite of contain. It enlarges the image to fill the container while maintaining its aspect ratio (preventing distortion). The image essentially "covers" the full width or height of the container. In situations where the image and container have differing dimensions, parts of the image may be clipped at the edges.

Specify the desired height (varying heights can be set for FHD, HD, Tablet, Mobile using media queries), resulting in the image being cropped on the sides and zoomed if necessary (especially if it is shorter than the specified height).

Answer №2

In addition to using the background-size: cover; property,

It is recommended to utilize view port height for controlling the image's height. This approach ensures that the image will always be a certain percentage of the view port height, regardless of the device being used, whether it's a desktop, laptop, phone, etc. It offers a more flexible way to display height.

For example (covering the entire screen):

.yourelement {
  height: 100vh;
}

For example (covering half of the screen):

.yourelement {
  height: 50vh;
}

Make adjustments as needed.
