What is the best way to test out CSS effects before they go live

I enjoy customizing the CSS, like the posted dates on my portfolio

How can I make these changes without affecting the public view of the website?

One suggestion from a forum was to use .date {visibility:hidden;}

Answer №1

If you want to experiment with a small CSS change, try using the class .logged-in before your selectors. This way, the changes will only be visible when you are logged in.

For example, you can use:

.logged-in .date {
    visibility: hidden;
}

This ensures that your changes are only visible to you while logged in, without impacting the public view of your website.

However,

It is generally not recommended to test code changes on a live production environment, as this could potentially introduce bugs or overlook incorporating necessary classes like .logged-in, falling victim to Murphy's Law.

To safely test code changes without affecting visitors, it is advisable to set up a separate environment from your live website.

Recommended (but more complex) Method

  1. Begin by downloading and installing MAMP
  2. Download Wordpress and install it by
  3. placing it in MAMP's htdocs folder
  4. accessing http://localhost/
  5. Following the installation wizard
  6. Copy the theme you are using to wordpress/wp-content/themes on your local machine

This approach allows you to test changes in a local environment without affecting your site's live visitors.

Edit: As mentioned by @DBS, you can also utilize developer tools. In most modern browsers, simply press F12 to access them.

Answer №2

If you want to make quick changes without permanently altering a webpage, you can utilize your browser's developer tools. These modifications will only be temporary and will disappear once the page is refreshed.
