What is causing vertical-align:middle to not function in the same way as text-align:center?

Is there a reason why vertical-align:middle doesn't seem to work as easily as text-align:center?

It's frustrating that it's so challenging to get it right.

I'm curious why the folks at W3C haven't created something like text-align:middle.

What makes achieving vertical-align:middle similar to text-align:center so complicated?

Answer №1

The vertical-align property is specifically designed for inline elements and does not work on block-level elements such as div or paragraph. If you need to vertically align an inline element in the middle, use this method instead.

Answer №2

text-align:center

This CSS property instructs the text to be centered within the width of the <p> tag.

vertical-align:middle

On the other hand, this CSS property centers the <p> vertically in the middle of the parent tag <div>, requiring an increase in the height of the parent container.

Answer №3

When it comes to vertical alignment, think of aligning by height as shown below:

Text aligned at the top

Text aligned in the middle

Text aligned at the bottom
