Web font issue: Certain characters appear vertically compressed on Windows systems

Having a strange issue with the web font I'm using for a project. Initially, I thought it was only an IE bug (appeared in IE 9 on Windows Vista and Windows 7). I was fine switching to a system font for IE, but now that it's showing up in Chrome too, I really want to figure out what's going on. See screenshot below:

Edit: The font is Aktiv Grotesk Light, converted into a web font using the Font Squirrel Generator.

Answer №1

When it comes to font rendering, OS X definitely stands out compared to Windows. One of the key reasons is that OS X utilizes Subpixel rendering, which truly makes a difference.

If you're utilizing @fontface, consider giving cufón a try instead. In general, fonts tend to be more finely rendered with cufón than with @fontface on Windows.

Answer №2

This issue could be related to the font implementation or font rendering on Windows, depending on your perspective. Similar issues have been reported in other inquiries, such as css google fonts cyrillic - some letters are cut off.

A practical solution may involve trying a different font size (even just 1px can make a significant difference) and if that doesn't resolve the problem, considering switching to a different font altogether.
