Utilize visuals to select premade designs

I am looking to enhance the user experience in selecting templates on Wordpress by integrating images for a visual preview. Instead of a traditional text-based dropdown menu, users would be able to see what the template looks like before choosing it.

EDIT: To clarify my objective:

This functionality pertains to the Admin interface. Currently, when creating a page, templates are displayed in a dropdown list on the right. I envision replacing this with image previews so Admins can visually assess how each template will appear on the page.

For example, while using advanced custom fields, I can customize fields for specific templates but there is no visual representation available to the Admins. They only see the titles of the templates and not how they will actually look. I want to provide them with preview images for a better decision-making process.

Is it possible to make this customization in Wordpress? Where can I find the settings to implement these changes?

Answer №1

Administrator or User Interface?

Absolutely, it can be done.

There is a current method in place to alter Themes (referred to as "Templates") in WordPress, but this feature is only accessible with login credentials. Visual aids are also provided.

Alternatively

You have the option to create buttons that allow users (visitors) without login details to customize how your website appears. This can be achieved using Javascript by switching from the current style to another.

$('#template').click(function (){
  $('link[href="style.css"]').attr('href','style.css');
});

$('#template1').click(function (){
  $('link[href="style1.css"]').attr('href','style1.css');
});

$('#template2').click(function (){
  $('link[href="style2.css"]').attr('href','style2.css');
});

There are countless methods to accomplish this goal.
