Tips on how to showcase a picture with the focus on the center by enlarging it within

We have a long frame on the page, with an aspect ratio of about 3.5:1 width to height. However, most of the photos being displayed are in a 4:3 ratio, which is larger and not a proper fit for the frame.

The customer really wants the long frame and has no plans to change its size at this point.

Currently, the photos are being displayed by resizing the width to fit the frame's width and then filling from the top of the photo to the bottom of the frame. This results in almost half of the photo being cut off at the bottom, making it look unappealing.

I realize that it's nearly impossible to perfectly fit both the width and height without distorting the photo.

My plan is to try displaying part of the photo from the center instead.

How can I achieve this using CSS?

Note: The "frame" mentioned here is represented by a "div" element.

One method to center img elements within a frame while maintaining proportion is by utilizing the CSS properties position, and transform, along with adding padding, as shown below:

.framed {
  position: relative;
  width: 100%;
  /*Proportion 3.5:1 with the padding*/
  padding-top: 28.5%;
  overflow:hidden;
}
.framed img {
  width: 100%;
  position: absolute;
  top: 50%;
  transform: translateY(-50%);
}
<h5>Original Image</h5>
<img src="http://placekitten.com/200" />

<h5>Framed Image</h5>
<div class="framed">
  <img src="http://placekitten.com/200" />
</div>

In my opinion, the best approach would be to utilize the background-image and background-position properties. To customize your frame, you can implement the following CSS:

#myFrame {
    background-image: url('/path/to/image.png');
    background-size: cover;
    background-position: center;
    background-repeat: no-repeat;
}
  • The background-size: cover; attribute will proportionally scale the background image to fill 100% of the frame.

  • By setting background-position: center;, you can align the background image exactly as specified in your example.

  • To prevent the background from repeating, use background-repeat: no-repeat;, which overrides the default behavior.

Remember to adjust the /path/to/image.png to match your relative image path.

Take a look at an example demonstrating this approach.
