The navigation dropdown menu in Bootstrap 4 spills over the edges of the window

In the code snippet provided above, an example of a navbar with a dropdown menu is given. One issue that arises is when the dropdown menu is clicked and it overflows to the right, causing a horizontal scroll bar to appear on the window.

The question at hand is: How can we ensure that the dropdown menu always stays within the window boundaries, even in mobile view?

  </ul>
</nav>

Answer №1

According to the guidelines in bootstrap 4 documentation:

By default, a dropdown menu will be placed 100% from the top and on the left side of its parent element. To align the dropdown menu to the right instead, simply include .dropdown-menu-right class within the .dropdown-menu container.

Therefore, just applying .dropdown-menu-right will ensure the menu is aligned to the right.

Answer №2

Customize the bootstrap styles:

.dropdown-menu {
    right: 0 !important;
    left: auto !important;
}

This should solve your issue

Answer №3

To implement dropdown menus in Bootstrap 4, you will need to include the class "dropdown-menu-right". Here is an example:

  <li class="nav-item dropdown">
    <a class="nav-link dropdown-toggle" href="#" id="navbarDropdown" role="button" data-toggle="dropdown" aria-haspopup="true" aria-expanded="false">
      Dropdown
    </a>
    <div class="dropdown-menu dropdown-menu-right" aria-labelledby="navbarDropdown">
      <a class="dropdown-item" href="#">Action</a>
      <a class="dropdown-item" href="#">Another action</a>
      <div class="dropdown-divider"></div>
      <a class="dropdown-item" href="#">Something else here</a>
    </div>

  </li>

For Bootstrap 5, simply add the class "dropdown-menu-end". Here is an example:

        <ul className="dropdown-menu dropdown-menu-end" aria-labelledby="navbarDropdown">
            <li><a className="dropdown-item" href="#">Action</a></li>
            <li><a className="dropdown-item" href="#">Another action</a></li>
            <li><hr className="dropdown-divider" /></li>
            <li><a className="dropdown-item" href="#">Something else here</a></li>
        </ul>

This example can be modified to suit your specific needs and requirements.

I hope this information proves useful for you.

If you're facing an issue with your navigation bar, a quick fix is to enclose it within a container (or container-fluid) class as shown below:

<link rel="stylesheet" href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/4.0.0/css/bootstrap.min.css" integrity="sha384-Gn5384xqQ1aoWXA+058RXPxPg6fy4IWvTNh0E263XmFcJlSAwiGgFAW/dAiS6JXm" crossorigin="anonymous">

<nav id="navbar-example2" class="navbar navbar-light bg-light">
   <div class="container">
       <a class="navbar-brand" href="#">Navbar</a>
       <ul class="nav nav-pills">

           <li class="nav-item dropdown pr-3 pr-sm-2">
               <a class="nav-link dropdown-toggle" data-toggle="dropdown" href="#" role="button" aria-haspopup="true" aria-expanded="false">Dropdown</a>
               <div class="dropdown-menu">
                   <a class="dropdown-item" href="#one">one</a>
                   <a class="dropdown-item" href="#two">two</a>
                   <div role="separator" class="dropdown-divider"></div>
                   <a class="dropdown-item" href="#three">three</a>
               </div>
           </li>
       </ul>
   </div>
</nav>

Furthermore, the pr-3 pr-sm-2 classes provide some additional right padding to the drop-down menu.
