The default file type for a new file in Sublime Text 2

While searching through the questions and answers, I noticed that none of them quite matched what I was looking for. Each time I open a new file, it automatically defaults to a plain text file. Since I primarily work with HTML files, I was wondering if there is a setting that can be changed so that each new file will default to HTML instead? I hope this is something that can be adjusted.

Sincerely, Rob

Start by creating a custom plugin by navigating to

Tools > Developer > New Plugin...

Insert the following code:

import sublime, sublime_plugin

class CustomSyntax(sublime_plugin.EventListener):
   def on_new(self, view):
      view.set_syntax_file('Packages/CustomSyntax/Support/CustomSyntax.tmLanguage')

Save the file as NewCustomSyntax.py. Any new tabs opened will display the custom syntax.

You have the option to change the syntax to suit your needs. To determine the path of a specific syntax, simply open a file using that syntax, access the console (View > Show Console) and enter:

view.settings().get('syntax')

There is a way to achieve this using the ApplySyntax Plugin. Once you have installed it (for example, through PackageControl), you can configure the ApplySyntax User Settings as follows:

"new_file_syntax": "HTML",

With this setting in place, any new file you open will default to the HTML syntax. You also have the option to set any other syntax that you have installed.
