Storing a chosen avatar in a database: A step-by-step guide

I am looking to display a selection of 10 avatars on my website for users to choose from. There will be no option for users to upload their own avatar. Users will simply click on the avatar image they want and then click the "done" button. The selected avatar name will be saved in the database and their profile icon will change to the chosen avatar.

I have searched extensively for a solution to this, but have been unable to find one.

I would greatly appreciate any ideas or suggestions on how to implement this feature.

Thank you in advance!

Answer №1

To achieve this goal, consider the following steps:

Start by establishing a new table specifically for storing avatars in your database.

  • Include columns for: id, name, and path_to_image

When it comes to selecting an avatar in the user interface, display the list of avatars from the table and reference the unique ID of the chosen avatar in the user's table or class.

Answer №2

One suggestion is to create a database table that includes a base64 encoded image, such as an avatar. Each avatar can then be assigned a unique identifier.

In the user table, you can add a new column called userAvatarId, which will reference the avatar database table. This setup allows for easy updating of avatar ids and interchangeability of avatars.
