Setting the Minimum Width of Floating Columns in HTML and CSS

Can anyone provide some assistance? I am currently using a design that I want to modify so that the columns do not compress or shrink below a certain size. I have attempted to use "min-width" without success. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It would be interesting to know what steps you took to identify the source of your error. In my experience, adding a background color and setting a minimum width for col1 resolved the issue:

    background: none repeat scroll 0 0 green;
    float: left;
    left: 60%;
    min-width: 180px;
    overflow: hidden;
    position: absolute;
    width: 25%;
}
