My website gets all wonky when I try to resize the browser

Here is a visualization of my website's ideal appearance:

However, the actual display varies on different computers. After testing with browsershots.org, I noticed that my website looks messy on most browsers and even when resizing the browser window.

This issue may be due to the lack of horizontal scrolling on browser resize. I would appreciate any suggestions on how to resolve this problem.

You can visit my website at . If the page does not load, please try refreshing the window. Keep in mind that I am using a free web host during the development phase, so reliability may be an issue.

Answer №1

The main issue seems to be centered around using margins and paddings to align content on the screen, which can complicate things.

Instead of this approach, consider creating a wrapping div and applying margin: 0 auto; to it for centering.

I went ahead and made this adjustment to your page, feel free to take a look:

I simply added two divs with the class "wrapper" along with some CSS resets. You can review the code for more details.

Next, determine the type of layout you wish to create:

  • Fixed: Similar to stackoverflow.com, where the page remains unchanged when the window is resized.
  • Fluid: Resembles wikipedia.org, expanding to fill all available space and adapting to browser size.
  • Responsive: Like css-tricks.com, adjusting the layout based on browser size.

For a visual explanation, check out this video:

Your subsequent steps will depend on the choice you make regarding the layout type.

Answer №2

Your webpage layout is causing issues due to fixed pixel widths and heights, which do not adjust when the window is resized. This leads to content overlapping or jumping around on the page.

The best solution is to use percentage values for sizing elements in your layout.

Below is a demo code snippet:

<body id="library">
        <div id="body">
            <div id="sidebar"></div>
            <div id="content">
                <div id="navbar"></div>
                <div id="contentwindow"></div>
            </div>
        </div>
</body>

CSS Styles:

html {
  height: 100%;
  width: 100%;
}
#library {
  margin: 0;
  width: 100%;
  height: 100%;
  background-color: black;
  overflow: hidden;
}
... (Additional CSS styles provided)

Implementing this approach and resizing the window will demonstrate a responsive design.
