Minimum width compared to Maximum Width

Exploring media queries for the first time and seeking some guidance.

I initially developed a Desktop version of my website, now considering making it responsive as well.

While researching, I came across suggestions to use max-width in this scenario, but I'm unsure if that's the right approach.

Would appreciate it if you could confirm whether my understanding is correct or not?

Answer №1

When using max-width in a media query, it dictates that all styles within that query will execute only if the viewport width is below the specified maximum value. For instance, with max-width: 1200px, all CSS rules will take effect for screens smaller than 1200px.

In contrast, min-width works in the opposite way by ensuring that the CSS rules apply when the screen size exceeds the minimum width defined. For example, min-width: 1200px would trigger all styles to be implemented on screens wider than 1200px.
