Is there a way to ensure that the content within a transparent div is completely visible?

Can this be done? If not, does anyone have any creative workarounds?

This demonstration will clearly illustrate the issue I am facing

Answer №1

Consider the following structure:

<div id="headerOut">
    <div id="headerIn"></div>
</div>
<div id="normalRed"></div>

Adjusting the opacity setting alone will not achieve the desired result due to the way opacity is applied. The opacity of headerIn cannot exceed that of headerOut.

However, you can create a similar effect by carefully manipulating the color and background with rgba(), as well as controlling the opacity of child elements.

Here's an example:

#headerOut {
    background-color:   rgba(0, 255, 0, 0.4);
    color:              rgba(0,   0, 0, 0.4);
}
#headerOut > img {
    opacity:            0.4;
}
#headerIn, #normalRed {
    background-color:   red;
    color:              black;
    opacity:            1;
}

For users on IE 8 and below, provide them with a simpler version of the site or apply a workaround using conditional comments:

<!--[if lt IE 9]>
<style type="text/css">
    #headerOut {
        background-color: #AFA;
        color: #888;
    }
    #headerOut > img {
        filter: alpha(opacity='40');
    }
</style>
<![endif]-->

View this implementation on jsFiddle.

Implementing other solutions would require the use of JavaScript. For instance:

  1. Retain the original layout...
  2. Utilize jQuery or similar libraries to duplicate the headerIn node, insert the clone into the document body, and position it directly over the original node.
