Is the hidden element still viewable even with display: none?

Can you explain why the icon is still visible when the display is set to none?

.toc.item {
  display: none;
}
 <a class="toc item"><i class="sidebar icon"></i></a>

Another helpful tip to add onto @GCyrillus' suggestion is to right-click on the icon and select "inspect element" in your web browser. This will allow you to locate your code within the HTML. If you notice that your code is being struck through, it means that another style is overriding yours. Look for a display property that is not being struck through in order to identify the conflicting code. If you are unable to find your code at all, it may be due to an issue with how the CSS file is linked.

If you continue to struggle with overriding the conflicting code, consider adding !important to your own code like so:

display: none !important;
