How to Style Your ASP.NET Website: Utilizing a Stylesheet with Visual Studio 2010

I am having trouble adding a stylesheet to the master page of my asp.net web form. I want to create an inline navigation menu at the top of the page, but I can't seem to get it working. I have created the stylesheet in the same way I would for an HTML site and placed it in the directory below. However, the code doesn't seem to be linking to the stylesheet.

In a typical HTML setup, the list items would look like this:

  • Home
  • About
  • Contact

The corresponding CSS would be:

ul {
list-style-type:none;
margin:0;
padding:0;
}

li {
display:inline;
padding:20px;
}

This CSS would make the items display inline across the top of the page. However, I'm struggling to implement this in my current setup.

Answer №1

There are a few key things to address here.

First and foremost, the CSS is being defined in three different locations!

You have inline CSS, CSS in the head section, and also externally. It's recommended to choose only one method for defining your CSS. I would recommend using external CSS.

To start, update the ASP form code from

<td style="background-color: #A3A3A3; color: #FFFFFF; font-family: 'Arial Black'; font-size: large; font-weight: bold;"
        class="style6">

to this:

<td class="style6">

Next, update your external CSS file with the following code:

.style6
{
    height: 79px; background-color: #A3A3A3; color: #FFFFFF; font-family: 'Arial Black'; font-size: large; font-weight: bold;
}

This removes the need for inline CSS.

Now, let's move on to removing the CSS from the head of the webForm. You can create a new file named master.css in your css folder and add the following code:

ul {
list-style-type:none;
margin:0;
padding:0;
}

li {
display:inline;
padding:20px;
}
.style1
{
    width: 100%;
}
.style2
{
    height: 459px;
}
.style3
{
    width: 100%;
    height: 100%;
}
.style6
{
    height: 79px; background-color: #A3A3A3; color: #FFFFFF; font-family: 'Arial Black'; font-size: large; font-weight: bold;
}
.style7
{
    width: 345px;
    height: 73px;
}

Answer №2

Customize your design here:

<%@ Master Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeBehind="Site.master.cs" Inherits="BSC.SiteMaster" %>

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en">
<head runat="server">
    <title></title>
    <link href="~/Styles/Site.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
    <link href="~/Styles/NewStyle.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />

    <asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="HeadContent" runat="server">
    </asp:ContentPlaceHolder>
</head>

Next, include this in the page:

<asp:Table CssClass=NewStyleExampleClass runat="server" >

Answer №3

To easily include the Main.css file in your cshtml document, simply insert the following line within the head section:

        @Styles.Render("~/Content/Main.css")

Your complete head section will resemble something like this:

    <head>
         <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8">
         <title>HTML Page</title>
         @Styles.Render("~/Content/main.css")
    </head>

Hopefully this information proves to be helpful!
