How can I modify the navbar-collapse in Bootstrap to alter the background color of the entire navbar when it is shown or open on a mobile screen?

Can anyone tell me how to change the background color of the navbar when the navbar-collapse is displayed? I want one background color when the navbar-collapse is shown and a different color when it's collapsed. Is there a way to achieve this using CSS or JS? I'm struggling to figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Providing an example using JQuery, let's imagine that the navbar-collapse element shows or hides by setting the display property as either block or none. In this case, you can listen for the style attribute to be applied in order to trigger an action.

if($('#navbar-collapse:visible').length == 0){
   $('#navbar').css('background: #000')
}

For instance, the code snippet above would change the background color of the navbar to black if the navbar-collapse was visible.
