Exploring the Vertical Metrics of Various Typeface Styles

I'm encountering a problem and struggling to find a solution. I'm in the process of creating a website and incorporating various fonts.

My goal is to ensure that every font appears visually similar to the others and align perfectly at the base.

For example, if I write HELLO (in Helvetica) HELLO (in Georgia), I can adjust the font sizes to ensure they match, but the issue lies with the baseline alignment.

Even with the fonts set at the same pixel size and line height, they do not line up horizontally when placed next to each other.

Check out the image here to see the problem!

Answer №1

It seems @cameron.townsend's comment is spot on. To achieve the desired look, make sure to apply vertical-align:baseline; to all your text.

If you want to see the different alignments in action, check out this fiddle: https://jsfiddle.net/g7oqupej/1/

Interestingly, Chrome's default behavior (vertical-align:initial;) appears to be aligned with vertical-align:baseline;. I haven't tested other browsers, but the fonts used in the fiddle seem to align as expected.

To further troubleshoot, I recommend creating a fiddle showcasing the issue you're facing.
