Exploring the possibilities of customizing gutters in Bootstrap v4 Beta

Is it possible to customize grid gutters at different breakpoints?

I am aware that Twitter invested millions of dollars in perfecting Bootstrap v4, and I don't expect to overhaul everything overnight. However, I am curious if there is a way to create custom gutters for each breakpoint.

For example, I would like the gutter size to be 30px on large screens, 24px on smaller devices, and 20px on mobile.

Answer №1

If you want to include a custom gutter in your layout, here's how you can do it:

.row.custom-gutter {
  margin-left: 30px;
  margin-right: 30px;
}

[class^='col'].custom-gutter,
[class*=' col'].custom-gutter {
  padding-left: 30px;
  padding-right: 30px;
}

After adding the custom gutter, don't forget to adjust the padding for smaller devices using media queries.

Answer №2

To customize the grid columns in your project, locate the _variables.scss file within your-folder/node_modules/bootstrap/scss/ and find the following code:

// Grid columns
//
// Set the number of columns and specify the width of the gutters.

$grid-columns:                  12 !default;
$grid-gutter-width-base:        30px !default;
$grid-gutter-widths: (
  xs: $grid-gutter-width-base,
  sm: $grid-gutter-width-base,
  md: $grid-gutter-width-base,
  lg: $grid-gutter-width-base,
  xl: $grid-gutter-width-base
) !default;

If you wish to adjust the breakpoints for different screen sizes, you can modify the settings using this snippet:

// Grid breakpoints
//
// Define the minimum dimensions at which your layout will change,
// adapting to different screen sizes, for use in media queries.

$grid-breakpoints: (
  xs: 0,
  sm: 576px,
  md: 768px,
  lg: 992px,
  xl: 1200px
) !default;
@include _assert-ascending($grid-breakpoints, "$grid-breakpoints");
@include _assert-starts-at-zero($grid-breakpoints);
