Ensure that the footer remains at the bottom of the webpage, without being positioned as fixed

I am encountering an issue on my work2 Website where the footer is not staying at the bottom of the page when there is limited content. I have searched extensively on Google, YouTube, and CSS tricks for a solution, but have not found one that works for my specific page. That's why I'm reaching out here for some help.

What I am trying to achieve is similar to this. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely, Mike

Answer №1

To incorporate this code, simply follow the guidance provided in the link. The key aspects to consider include:

  • Ensuring the footer height is fixed and positioned absolutely with bottom: 0 within a relatively positioned element
  • Setting the bottom padding of the content equal to the footer height to allow for proper spacing

For your specific website, apply the following additions:

html {
  height: 100%;
}

body {
  position: relative;
  min-height: 100%;
}

footer {
  position: absolute;
  bottom: 0;
  height: 35px;
  width: 100%;
}

.content {
  padding-bottom: 60px;
}

Ensure to test these changes on your website, by adding them directly into your style.css file.

Answer №2

Place your footer within the body element to ensure valid HTML structure. Additionally, you can utilize flexbox to effortlessly expand the content to fill any remaining space on the screen:

body {
    min-height: 100%;
    display: flex;
    flex-direction: column;
}
#content {
    flex: 1;
}

Why opt for this approach? It simplifies footer design by allowing it to vary in height as needed.

Answer №3

By implementing the same structure as outlined in your demonstration, you will notice that both the html and body tags have a height attribute set to 100%. Additionally, the wrapper div has a minimum height of 100% and is positioned relatively.

This setup allows the footer div in the example to be placed absolutely at the bottom of the wrapper div, effectively aligning it with the bottom of the page as well.

To visually understand this concept better, try using Chrome's DOM inspector tool. Select the html or body tag (either one), followed by the wrapper div, and finally the footer div in that specific order. This way, you can see how each element interacts within the layout.
