Embarking on the journey of creating mobile web applications - where should you begin?

How can I begin learning to create mobile web apps? I have a keen interest in the design aspects, particularly the effects and animations that give them a native appearance. I suspect there are differences in CSS, HTML, and possibly JavaScript compared to regular web applications, especially when considering screen sizes.

As a Java developer, I typically rely on templates, but I do have solid experience with CSS and HTML. However, I feel somewhat out of touch when it comes to mobile web apps.

If you're interested in creating a cross-platform mobile application using HTML and JavaScript, then Phonegap is worth checking out. This tool allows you to develop a single application that can run on various platforms including Android, iOS, Blackberry, Bada, Windows, and Symbian.

In my opinion, one of the most effective ways to achieve a native-like experience and appearance for a mobile web-app is by utilizing jQuery Mobile along with ThemeRoller. The documentation is thorough and there are plenty of resources available for learning.

jQuery Mobile, which is built on jQuery, is designed to offer consistency while being customizable across various mobile platforms.

If you're looking to streamline your development process, I suggest incorporating a framework into your workflow. Luckily, there are numerous options available to choose from.

  • Sencha Touch: This framework is incredibly comprehensive. Eliminating the need to manually code in HTML and CSS, Sencha Touch automatically generates these elements for you. With a Java-like pseudo-class structure and thorough documentation, it's a reliable choice.
  • JQTouch: While more basic compared to others, JQTouch remains a solid option.
  • jQuery Mobile: Falling somewhere in between complexity levels, jQuery Mobile provides a balanced approach.
  • The-M-Project: Although lesser-known, The-M-Project shows potential. It's worth exploring, even if I haven't personally tested it yet.

All of these frameworks come equipped with widgets that include the necessary CSS and JavaScript for animations and native appearances. In other words, you can focus on building your application without sweating over styling details.
