Do HTML sprite images load before anything on the page is displayed?

If I have a photo with sprites:

When using these sprites on the website, will they appear as soon as that portion of sprites.png is loaded or will they only become visible after the entire sprites.png file has finished loading?

Let's say my connection speed is so slow that this delay would be noticeable...

To put it another way: Will the STARKA text (located at the top of the .png) show up on the website before the social media icons (lower down), or will they both be displayed simultaneously AFTER sprites.png has been completely loaded?

Answer №1

As stated on the Yahoo website: The placement of your Stylesheets can impact when content is displayed, as certain browsers may wait for all related graphic elements to load before showing the content. This might lead you to believe there is no difference in using or not using sprites, especially with high-speed connections.

However, utilizing sprites can greatly decrease the loading time of a page. For example, "STARKA" could appear before the social icons even on extremely slow connections.

Considering the number of different images on your website, implementing sprites is definitely worth the effort. While it may not solve issues for those on 56K connections, it can still enhance the user experience for many visitors :)
