Displaying Empty Boxes using Font Awesome

I was able to show Font Awesome properly before, but now it's not working even though I haven't made any changes. I've attempted various solutions but nothing seems to be fixing the issue. My goal is to display it as a placeholder.

Below is my code (HTML / CSS):

input {
  font-family: 'FontAwesome';
}
<!-- included -->
<script src="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/4.0.0-alpha.6/js/bootstrap.min.js" integrity="sha384-vBWWzlZJ8ea9aCX4pEW3rVHjgjt7zpkNpZk+02D9phzyeVkE+jo0ieGizqPLForn" crossorigin="anonymous"></script>
<link rel="stylesheet" href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/4.0.0-alpha.6/css/bootstrap.min.css" integrity="sha384-rwoIResjU2yc3z8GV/NPeZWAv56rSmLldC3R/AZzGRnGxQQKnKkoFVhFQhNUwEyJ" crossorigin="anonymous">
<link href="http://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/font-awesome/4.1.0/css/font-awesome.min.css" rel="stylesheet">

<input id="user" type="text" class="form-control" placeholder="username&#xf007;"/>

Any ideas on what could be causing this issue? Appreciate your help in advance!

Answer №1

The issue with the empty box displaying is due to the character (&#xf007;) not being available in the font family of Bootstrap. To resolve this, you need to override the default font-family of Bootstrap by either using !important on the font-family rule or specifying a more specific CSS rule using a class, for example:

input {
  font-family: sans-serif, 'FontAwesome'!important;
}
input.more-specific {
  font-family: sans-serif, 'FontAwesome';
}
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/tether/1.4.0/js/tether.min.js"></script>
<script src="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/4.0.0-alpha.6/js/bootstrap.min.js" integrity="sha384-vBWWzlZJ8ea9aCX4pEW3rVHjgjt7zpkNpZk+02D9phzyeVkE+jo0ieGizqPLForn" crossorigin="anonymous"></script>
<link rel="stylesheet" href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/4.0.0-alpha.6/css/bootstrap.min.css" integrity="sha384-rwoIResjU2yc3z8GV/NPeZWAv56rSmLldC3R/AZzGRnGxQQKnKkoFVhFQhNUwEyJ" crossorigin="anonymous">
<link href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/font-awesome/4.1.0/css/font-awesome.min.css" rel="stylesheet">

<!-- input elements -->
<input id="user" type="text" class="form-control" placeholder="username &#xf007;"/>
<input id="user" type="text" class="form-control more-specific" placeholder="username &#xf007;"/>

To simplify the process, you can apply the CSS class .fa directly to the <input> element like this:

<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js></script>
<script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/tether/1.4.0/js/tether.min.js></script>
<script src="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/4.0.0-alpha.6/js/bootstrap.min.js" integrity="sha384-vBWWzlZJ8ea9aCX4pEW3rVHjgjt7zpkNpZk+02D9phzyeVkE+jo0ieGizqPLForn" crossorigin="anonymous></script>
<link rel="stylesheet" href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/4.0.0-alpha.6/css/bootstrap.min.css" integrity="sha384-rwoIResjU2yc3z8GV/NPeZWAv56rSmLldC3R/AZzGRnGxQQKnKkoFVhFQhNUwEyJ" crossorigin="anonymous>
<link href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/font-awesome/4.1.0/css/font-awesome.min.css" rel="stylesheet>

<!-- input element -->
<input id="user" type="text" class="form-control fa" placeholder="username &#xf007;"/>

Your HTML code should include the following line to load FontAwesome. You're on the right track, great job! :)

<link href="http://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/font-awesome/4.1.0/css/font-awesome.min.css" rel="stylesheet">

To resolve the font awesome issue, update the input box markup as follows:

<div class="input-group mb-2 mb-sm-0">
  <div class="input-group-addon"><i class="fa fa-user"></i></div>
  <input type="text" class="form-control" id="inlineFormInputGroup" placeholder="Username">
 </div>

I hope this information proves helpful. :)
