CSS trick to create borders in a two-column div layout

When 2 borders overlap, it can create a bad appearance. I am trying to add borders to the list items within a div while also separating them from the adjacent div with a border.

<div id="1">

</div>

<div>
    <ul>
        <li>item</li>
        <li>item</li>
        <li>item</li>
    </ul>
</div>

Take a look at my demo http://jsfiddle.net/CfYhY/

This is the effect I desire: https://i.sstatic.net/BOA78.jpg

Have you experimented with utilizing negative margins?

Click here to view an example.

li {
    border-left: 4px solid red;
    border-bottom: 1px solid white;
    padding-left: 10px;
    margin-left: -4px;
}

By the way, it's recommended not to start element IDs with a number.
