CSS: Adjusting the vertical position of text without affecting the background

I am currently working on some CSS buttons that expand in size when hovered over. I have successfully increased the text size as well, but now I am facing an issue with aligning the text a few pixels lower without affecting the background image layout.

Can anyone assist me with this?

This is the code snippet I am using:

<div id="nav">
    <a href="index.php">Home</a>
    <a id="headrush">Beer Bongs</a>
    <a id="thabto">Novelty</a>
</div>

#nav a {
    background: url(Images/Button.png);
    height: 28px;
    width: 130px;
    font-family: "Book Antiqua";
    font-size: 12px;
    text-align: center;
    vertical-align: bottom;
    color: #C60;
    text-decoration: none;
    background-position: center;
    margin: auto;
    display: block;
    position: relative;
}

#nav a:hover {
    background: url(Images/Button%20Hover.png);
    height: 34px;
    width: 140px;
    font-family: "Book Antiqua";
    font-size: 16px;
    text-align: center;
    color: #C60;
    text-decoration: none;
    margin: -3px;
    z-index: 2;
}

#nav a:active {
    background: url(Images/Button%20Hover.png);
    height: 34px;
    width: 140px;
    font-family: "Book Antiqua";
    font-size: 14px;
    text-align: center;
    color: #862902;
    text-decoration: none;
    margin: 0 -3px;
    z-index: 2;
}

Answer №1

To adjust the spacing between lines in your text, simply utilize the line-height CSS property.

Answer №2

Using line-height can be beneficial in certain situations.

An issue with using line-height is that if you have a background color, it may also expand along with the text.

In a recent project, I found myself nesting some divs

To solve this problem, I added position:relative; top:20px;

<div class="col-lg-11">
   <div style="position:relative; top:20px;">CR</div>
</div>

It's important to note that this inline style is only temporary.

Answer №3

To style your links, use the following CSS code:

#nav a:link {
background: #ff00ff url(Images/Button.png);
height:28px;
width:130px;
font-family:"Book Antiqua";
font-size:12px;
text-align:center;
vertical-align:bottom;
color:#C60;
text-decoration:none;
background-position:center;
display:block;
position:relative;
}

For :hover and :visited, specify only the properties you want to change like background or font-size.

#nav a:hover {
    background: #f000f0 url(Images/Button%20Hover.png);
}

In your link styles, there are differences in size:
a - height:28px; width:130px;,
a:hover - height:34px; width:140px;,
a:visited - height:34px; width:140px;),

This variation in size is causing changes in position due to margin settings for different states of the link.

Answer №4

To create space below the text, consider using padding-bottom.

Answer №5

Vertical alignment is the key

.content-to-align {
    vertical-align: middle;
}
