Creating an object positioned to the right side of a div (div:right) is a matter of using CSS positioning properties

While we are familiar with pseudo-classes like :before and :after, have you ever wondered why there is no nav ul li a:left or :right?

Do you think it's achievable? I'm open to using HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript to make it happen.

Answer №1

Consider :before and :after like :left and :right.

While :left and :right are not actual pseudo-classes, you can use :before and :after to position elements to the left and right as needed.

div {
  margin: 0 auto;
  background: blue;
  width: 200px;
}
div:before {
  position: relative;
  left: -75px;
  background: red;
  content: 'To the left';
}
div:after {
  position: relative;
  right: -75px;
  background: green;
  content: 'right';
}
<div>Some text</div>

To address the question at hand

Can additional pseudo-classes be created?

No.

How can I achieve this effect then?

You will need to utilize extra elements and adjust your HTML in order to accomplish it.
