Creating an ASP.NET MVC application, the index table seems to extend beyond the confines of the page

Embarking on the journey of creating my first web app after years of mastering C# Windows Forms development in .NET has been a thrilling adventure. Following the guidance of the NerdDinner tutorial, I've tweaked certain components to align with my project's requirements. Currently, all functions are operational, but I have additional features waiting to be implemented.

My Index View is presented in a table format. However, upon display, the table exceeds the width of the browser window, even when maximized. Consequently, I rely on the bottom scroll bar to navigate through the complete table. Nevertheless, there exists a dilemma where the table overlaps with a border encircling the browser window. This leads to the latter half of the table being positioned over the blue border instead of the desired white space. Thus far, I have refrained from altering the site.css file. While attempting to seek solutions through web searches, I encountered vague results as I am unsure about the specific element requiring modification. Most resources I stumbled upon covered adjusting the table border rather than the page border.

Answer №1

If you're looking to make some adjustments without concrete examples, you might want to experiment with the site's CSS file.

Find the "body" class within the file.

Consider modifying or adding attributes like width:800px, min-width:450px, or even width:auto.

These are the standard configurations I typically utilize for my own websites.

Don't forget to fine-tune the #main class as well.

Answer №2

Encountered a challenge with my ASP.Net MVC project that I'm keen on optimizing for iPad usage (particularly on Safari). The issue was with the width of an HTML table being solely determined by its content, specifically the columns within it, which refused to shrink beyond the width of the widest text, even if it could be broken down. In simpler terms, not narrower than any standard word break.

Fortunately, CSS3 introduced the 'word-break' property, with a valuable property value of 'break-all': This allows lines to break between any two grapheme clusters within words, without applying hyphenation. A useful tool for cases where the text primarily consists of CJK characters with minimal non-CJK elements, aiming for a better distribution across each line.

Applying 'word-break: break-all' to the 'table td' section effectively resolved the issue in browsers that support it, notably Safari on iPad. The updated code snippet now reads: table td

{
  padding: 5px;
  border: solid 1px #e8eef4;
  word-break: break-all;
}
