Check out this unexpected margin issue affecting the first element within the Container! Can you please provide an explanation for this anomaly?

Take a moment to check out this fiddle. In Container1 and Container2, the background color is set to #ccc, and h1 and .logo div have margins. While the left and right margins are working properly, the top and bottom margins are not functioning as expected.

This issue seems to arise only when a container has its first element with a margin. Can you explain why this is the case? Provide a suitable reason for your answer.

Answer №1

The reason behind this behavior is the margin collapsing effect, where top and bottom margins collapse into each other causing elements not to expand properly.

and colinaarts.com/articles/the-magic-of-overflow-hidden/

Solution:

To fix margin collapsing, you can set containers to `float: left|right` (or use `position: absolute`), apply `border: solid 1px` (try `border-top: solid 1px;` for better clarity), or use `min-height: height-with-margins` to avoid collapsing.

Important to note:

During margin collapsing, the margin area is ambiguous due to shared margins between boxes.

Margins of floating and absolutely positioned elements do not collapse.
