Change all instances of the asterisk character to a red color on every page using CSS styling

Is it possible to change the color of the asterisk that indicates required fields on all forms across my site without having to wrap it in a div or another wrapper?

Answer №1

Here's a helpful tip for you: use jQuery to replace all "*" symbols with red-colored text.

$("body").html($("body").html().replace(/[*]/g,'<span style="color:red">*</span>'));

Answer №2

Imagine if your HTML was structured in the following way:

 <input type="text" name="myName" /><span>*</span>

In that case, your CSS could resemble this:

 input + span{
     color: #ff0000;
 }

This approach might bring you closer to achieving your desired outcome . . .

Answer №3

To easily add a red asterisk to required input fields without manual effort, utilize the ::after pseudo element. As long as your HTML structure resembles this:

<div>
  <label for="input-field">First Name</label>
  <input type="text" name="input-field" id="input-field" required />
</div>

You can achieve this by applying the following CSS that adds a red asterisk at the end of any label within the same div as a required input or textarea field.

div:has(*:is(input, textarea):required) > label::after {
    content: " *";
    color: red;
}

If you prefer not to have a separate div for each input, consider using the aria-labelledby attribute of an input to associate it with its label. This alternative approach may offer a more efficient solution, although I haven't personally implemented it in this manner.
