Background Image Will Not Expand

After searching for a solution on how to stretch the background image in HTML for this specific section of my website, I came across this code. However, despite implementing it, the desired effect is not being achieved. Can anyone spot what mistake I may be making?

< style type="text/css">

<--
body {
    background-image: url(at4.jpg);
    background-repeat: no-repeat;
    height: 100%;
         width: 100%;

 }
 -->
 </style>

Answer №1

Try using the CSS property background-size: 100%;

This simple addition will cause your background image to stretch and fill the container.

SEE IT IN ACTION

Here is the code snippet:

body {
    background-image: url(http://www.example.com/image.jpg);
    background-repeat: no-repeat;
    height: 100%;
    width: 100%;
    background-size: 100%;
}

Hoping that this solution resolves your issue.

Answer №2

To achieve the desired effect using CSS3, you can utilize the following properties:

background-size:cover (will crop the background image) or background-size: 100%; (will stretch the background image)

This solution is compatible across different browsers including IE9 and below.

For a live example, visit: http://jsfiddle.net/4gBXS/

#background {
    width: 100%;
    height: 100%;
    left: 0px;
    top: 0px;
}

.stretch {
    width:100%;
    height:100%;
}

Answer №3

When using CSS3, you have the ability to adjust the background size:

body {
   background-size: 100%;
}

This feature is supported on Chrome version 3.0 and above, Firefox version 3.6 and above, Internet Explorer version 9.0 and above, as well as Opera version 10 and above.

Check out this JSFiddle for some examples of how to use the property.
