Automatically Capitalize HTML Input Field for Desktop Web Browsers [such as Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and more]

After looking online, I noticed that all the answers pertain to mobile devices. Is there an autocapitalize attribute available for desktop browsers like Chrome, Firefox, or Safari and not just for mobile devices?

What I am trying to achieve is creating an input text field where, when a user types something, it automatically starts with a capitalized letter.

Is there a method to make this happen?

Answer №1

Give this a shot:

input {
    text-transform: capitalize;
}

Check out this fiddle for reference

If you want the first letter to be capitalized upon submission, you can use JavaScript, like so:

$('input[type="text"]').keyup(function(evt){

      // force: true to lowercase all letters except the first
      var cp_value= ucfirst($(this).val(),true) ;

      // to capitalize all words
      //var cp_value= ucwords($(this).val(),true) ;

      $(this).val(cp_value );

   });

Alternatively, you could perform some backend processing (such as using in PHP with ucfirst($string);
