A transparent float is yielding unexpected outcomes

<!Doctype html>
<html>
    <head>
        <meta charset="utf-8" />
        <title>testing code</title>
    </head>
    <body>
        <div style="float: left; width: 200px; height: 150px;
background-color: red;"></div>
        <div style="background-color: gray;">
            <div style="clear: left;"></div>
        </div>
    </body>
</html>

Can anyone explain why the heights of the red block and gray block are the same?

Answer №1

This is essentially a demonstration of how the clearfix technique functions.

In this scenario, the red block is floated to the left while the gray block remains unfloated. By having a clearing div nested within the gray block, it serves the purpose of aligning with the bottom of the red block to create an equal height effect between the two blocks.
