Would the addition of custom fonts to a CSS document through @font-face result in slower rendering speeds?

After downloading a font from dafont.com, I incorporated it into the stylesheet of an HTML file that resides solely on my computer. Modifying most of the buttons to utilize this new font has resulted in slower loading times (previously rendering almost instantly in my browser). Is there a solution to rectify this for local files and will the same issue persist once uploaded to a website?

Answer №1

Enhancing performance can be achieved through various strategies:

  • Prioritize using a local reference over an online version to mitigate the risk of unexpected font variations causing issues with the look and feel.
  • Implement lazy loading for fonts post-page rendering, unless the font plays a critical role on the page.
  • Avoid including @font-face declarations for unused fonts to prevent unnecessary downloads by some browsers.
  • Consider hosting fonts externally (e.g., Google Fonts) for faster page loading from cached versions and reducing server connections.
  • Take caution in selecting fonts based on their file sizes as larger files can significantly impact performance.
  • If feasible, gzip your font files to reduce download times and overall weight.
